One
of the county's most impressive structures is the limestone
courthouse which dominates Salem's public square. Listed
on the National Register of Historic Places, it was built
in 1888 from stone quarried at the edge of the city.
The stately structure has been renovated and still has
much of its antique furnishings. It continues to serve
as the seat of county government, as well as a source of
great pride for the residents of our county.
Over the years during the winter months and throughout
the holiday season, it takes on an almost magical
appearance. Salem's entire downtown area is decorated
in much the same manner during that time and conjures up
the best of times in the minds and spirits of everyone.
